Car‑free Zermatt: how to get all the way to your hotel
By the Swiss Taxi team · Published 5 September 2026
Zermatt has been closed to combustion vehicles since 1961. Every arrival goes through Täsch, 5 km downstream. Here is how we organise the end of the journey.
The Täsch terminal
The chauffeur drops you at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch, right at the shuttle‑train platform. Trains leave every 20 minutes from 6 am to 10 pm and take 12 minutes. A ticket costs about CHF 8 per adult. Luggage trolleys board the train with you.
The electric taxi to the hotel
At Zermatt station, your hotel often sends its own electric shuttle if you have told it your arrival time. Otherwise electric taxis wait outside the station. We can book either for you: just give us the hotel name when booking.
Luggage and skis
Everything travels with you on the train; the chauffeur loads the trolleys. For a group with a lot of equipment, some hotels offer luggage transport from Täsch: ask the hotel.
From Geneva, the direct train to Visp then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn takes 3 h 20 to 3 h 40 with one change: a good option alone or as a couple. As a group, with children or a late flight, the car to Täsch remains the simplest, and the shuttle train does the rest.
